We order from here often because it is close to home. The staff is always so helpful and friendly. The food is absolutely amazing. The potatoes are out of this world. We tried the carrot cake yesterday and it was great.

I'd give it a 4 if the price was like 3 bucks cheaper but it's starting to edge into the restaurant category without any of the other things that go with that. So it gets a 3. Good chicken, moist and not over dry, wish there was more bbq Sauce on the grilled chicken. Fried chicken was well seasoned but perhaps a bit too greasy. The broasted potatoes were good but also a bit greasy, however well seasoned. Price was a little higher (12 bucks for the chicken dinner) than I would've expected but all in all a pretty good experience. Call ahead and pick up to avoid a wait when it's busy

Always a family favorite. This location is one of the better locations, food is always ready quickly and tastes good.

I've gotten carryout here many many times and had a few occasions catered as well and nowadays, we just pass on the CS. My wife and I agree that we always REMEMBER the food being soooo much better than it ACTUALLY is. Always disappointed, greeeazzy chix, saaaad ribs, and overhyped taters...not cheap either. Nostalgia playing a major factor in their success.

The food here is pretty good however really over priced. If you want certain combinations of chicken, for me I prefer breast and leg, you have to buy a la carte which is crazy expensive. One chicken breast is 3.99. I ended up order the 4 piece dinner all white which has a $1 up charge and gives you 2 breasts and 2 wings 1 side, and 1 roll for $10.99 including the up charge. I can get quite a bit more for my money elsewhere.

This place could only be better if they delivered. There is a period we all but lived off this stuff. It is so tasty. We usually get the chicken grilled instead of battered and then dipped in the bbq sauce. Paired with the incredible broasted potatoes, we never scoff at the high price. But beware, it is expensive, but well worth it every now and then. A true Woodward original.

Really greasy, overcrowded at lunch. Probably wouldn't go back.

I love Chicken Shack is absolutely terrific! From awesome chicken selections to broasted potatoes to fried mushrooms--their food is second to none! And the service is always fast and courteous! A Royal Oak and Clawson staple! Call ahead carry out is a great option as well!

If you like the food great, service???? Sucks called in and had a very rude person say we close in 20 minutes so we are not taking orders. I would not go here ever again Bottom line service is important Also if Caitlin answers the phone hang up

I've been coming to chicken shack since a kid . I just can't get enough of it . Whether it's lunch, dinner or a party of 50 they have you covered . Best chicken around town , however if you like ranch with your chicken I suggest you choose another location than the woodward location as their ranch is mixed with about 75% water "so it seems" this is no exxaguration . I seriously abood this location after being let down a few times Due to their watered down ranch . Their employees are also dirty and have their underwear out and just list quality especially being the first location of the franchise .. Unfortunate!

Fried Chicken.... enough said! This was a unique spot for Chicken Shack. We stopped by for a late lunch and I guess everyone was craving chicken too because by the time we order and got our food, there was a line out the door. Granted it's not a big place and the only place to sit was counter style facing the window watching cars zoom by on Woodward. It's never a disappointment with Chicken Shack.

Solid broasted chicken and the bomb broasted potatoes. Artery clogging for sure but delish for an occasional treat! Always have decent service st this location. Parking is not so good.

Now that I'm a TX transplant I find myself missing the food I used to have while being a true Midwest girl. A few days ago I tried a Gus's Chicken that was newly opened in Austin. The chicken was solid but it made me reminisce about the delicious fried chicken I've had in my life prior to my big move. I spent a summer working as an intern at Beaumont and at least once a week I'd get chicken and a large order of broasted potatoes. Even after my internship ended I still found myself making the drive from Troy to pick up fried chicken from the Shack. In fact this place was also my usual lunch spot on Woodward Dream Cruise days. I remember the Chicken being super juicy and not heavily battered. My favorite thing is still the potatoes. Yes, I know they add extra brushstrokes of melted butter over them, but while my arteries cry for mercy, my stomach and taste buds rejoice. I remember them having very finely diced coleslaw. I'm not the biggest fan or critic of coleslaw but I remember thinking theirs tasted fine, but again, I'm not the person to ask about coleslaw. This review makes me nostalgic. I guess on my next 3-4 times/year visits home, I'll have to drop by and see if the chicken is as delicious as I remember it being three years ago!

This is one of the best chicken shacks in metropolitian detrot I hade the chicken snack with broasted potatoes chicken cooked to perfection and broasted potatoes where hot What i really like about their broasted potatoes they are cut alot smaller than other chicken shacks and they are cook light in color and not dark like they have been cooked in old grease keep up the good work

I tried Chicken Shack for the first time the other day. I placed a carry out order of a 12 piece bucket, potatoes, and coleslaw. I walked in and placed my order, and it was ready under five minutes..this was nice. The chicken was very crunchy, semi greasy, and tasty. It was fun to eat with my hands, and the chicken was very tender and easy to pull off the bone. Although, I can't see a huge difference between this chicken and any other kind of fried chicken I've had. The potatoes were tasty, but nothing to blog home about. (Write home is so out of date.) The coleslaw might have been my favorite part of the experience. It was delicious, crunchy, and slightly soupy. and I ate the whole tub myself. My boyfriend reheated some chicken in the oven the next day and said it was even crispier and delicious than it was right out of the box. Good to know, most of the time, leftover fried chicken is rendered useless. I will definitely visit Chicken Shack again when I am craving some unhealthy goodness.

After moving back to MI, we were finally able to get one of our old favorites. The chicken was nice and juicy! It was a little messy but it always was. Got chicken bites for our daughters first CS experience. There were tons and she was able to munch for the next few hours. They were just as tasty. Wish the potatoes had a little more flavor but with some ketchup all was good. All in all, it really got the spot!!

BROasted! It was bland and greasy. I remember back in High School, when cruising down Woodward, a few times we stopped and got some chicken at the chicken shack and I remember it being really yummy. But now I'm thinking I must have been really stoned at the time. Or maybe my taste have changed, but the chicken I recently had here was really bland and boring, I don't think they season or marinate or anything. We ordered a 8 piece bucket with potatoes and coleslaw, the chicken was overcooked and dry, the potatoes were so greasy I thought they were in sauce at first, but no that's just congealed deep frier "boaster" grease. No seasoning at all, the coleslaw was alright, I though the texture was a little strange due to it being diced so fine it's more like cabbage dust than Julianne. Perhaps, it didn't help that we had Popeye's a week before and in comparison it was so much better. Sorry chicken shack, but you need to try harder. We also got a couple of your dime store/ elementary school cafeteria rolls, pretty uninspired and on the verge of being stale, we passed on your prepackaged store bought desserts . btw, I didn't understand why they had like 8 employees standing around and no customers.

  • Amanda W.

A working take-out dinner of the unhealthy delicious sort. We got battered fried cod, broasted chicken, and potatoes. Sadly the rolls and coleslaw didn't get included with our order but that was the only complaint from the group.

Oh Chicken Shack how I miss ye'. I never realized that Broasted Chicken was a thing that you could only get in a few select states. Now that I am in New York I weep daily that I cannot get your scrumptious broasted chicken goodness. In case you have never heard of broasted chicken I will be happy to enlighten you. Broasted chicken is basically a way to fry chicken under pressure using a special marinading process. Broasting the chicken makes it have the taste of fried chicken, but is moister and less greasy. Hello? Can you say delicous. Chicken shacks chicken is fabulous. It is moist and seriously there is nothing like it. Their broasted potatoes are like sex on a plate. Seriously. Best thing ever. Smothered in butter and crisped to perfection. Every time I am back in Michigan I make it a point to chow down at the shack (well...get carry out...chicken shack is better savored at home). Even the coleslaw is a thing of legends. If you are in Michigan and have never had "the shack" you are missing out. Go there...and go there now. Tell them Sarah says hi.

Solid lunch menu, deluxe chicken sandwich combo is my favorite (#5). Be careful when you get food to-go here, if they are busy I've received an incorrect order or item on more than one occasion. The thing is, I can forgive them as long as they don't forget the broasted potatoes :)

Chicken Shack is F'N awesome! Hands down best fried chicken and broasted potatoes I've ever had. I love Chicken Shack. Thank you Chicken Shack and keep up the good work!

This place is pure evil. It's good. It's damn good. To an outsider, I had no idea what to expect of "broasted" chicken. It is essentially a much juicier, flavorful fried chicken. I also had no idea what a "broasted" potato could be like... it's just a crispy potato wedge -- SLATHERED in butter. I never thought I could ever say this, but if you want a healthier alternative get the french fries! But damn, those potatoes are good. This place is packed with guilt and calories. $5 for lunch gets you a thigh, leg, broasted potatoes, a bun, and a small soft drink.

Chicken Shack has some of the best ribs in the city. Grilled to perfection, the lean meat falls off the bone. The chicken of course is great as well... Both the tenders and the broasted bird. They have these broasted potatoes which are unique in flavor and very tasty. The coleslaw is also very good. A few counter spots to eat in at this location, but it's primarily a take out joint. Chicken Shack will cater your party big or small. It's high quality eatin' and you'll pay a premium for it, but it's well worth it in my opinion.

  • Dave M.

Gotta love Chicken Shack. 2-3 pieces, some fabulous broasted potatoes and slaw, and I'm in a blissful somewhat-greasy nirvana. But wait, the chicken is broasted, not fried. The end result is some tasty chicken that is moist and flavorful on the inside, while crispy on the outside. The potatoes are the same story, and just as addicting. Chicken Shack is consistent. I've been stopping at this location for more than 10 years--dinner for two, and carryout for parties of 60. The quality has never varied.

I just wasn't amazed by the Chicken Shack. Maybe I built up too much anticipation for the "broasted" chicken.. raised my expectations too much.. I dunno. I don't like eating meat off the bone, so I got the chicken tenders meal. For $8+ I got 5 TOUGH pieces of chicken and the potato wedges. Mind you, the wedges were good, but nothing special. Certainly not good enough to make up for the inedible chicken tenders... I barely could chew my way through one of them, and the other 4 went straight in the trash. And ranch dipping sauce in a packet? C'mon now, make your own in-house! We all know the ranch packets suck. I got my boyfriend a 3-pc chicken meal, and he said it was pretty good. It is the only reason they are getting 3 stars instead of 2. I thought the prices were a little steep for what I got (of course, if I was happy with my meal I wouldn't have thought twice about spending $19 on carry-out for 2 sans drinks). I saw a big sign on their window with lunch deals/specials, so maybe I will give them another shot. Every establishment has bad days, but shoot, you are KNOWN for your chicken! I will give them ONE more try!

I have been jonesing for some fried chicken since I moved up north and this fit the bill. The prices are higher than I would like, but they make everything on the spot and I do not mind waiting. Compared to chicken I get at the grocery store, the pieces did seem smallish. However, I wonder if the grocery store chicken is more of an aberration than an indictment of the chicken at the shack. I couldn't decide between the fried chicken and the roasted so I went with both. Both were delicious. The broasted potatoes were saturated in butter, but also tasty.

I enjoy the smelt dinner with tartar sauce, a side of potato braosted and dripping with butter, and sop that mess up witha roll. I then call my cardiologist to setup an angioplasty procedure. It ain't healty, but when you ask someone for a good place to eat, do you ever ask "Do you know where there is a healthy place to eat?" NO. You know you want it. Try the chicken, try the smelt, but please sop up the buttery mess in your biscuit. You'll be glad you did.

    (4)
  • Bill B.

Yes, its sorta expensive for "fast food". Yes, its probably not good for you, but... If you want the best ribs bar none. Try the ribs. The broasted potatoes are incredible. I have moved from detroit, but miss this grub. All other chicken and ribs are judged against Chicken Shack.

August 14, 2003-- a vast majority of the Northeastern Region of the United States went dark. Also known as the infamous "Blackout." What kills me is that nearly everybody was without power-- not the Chicken Shack... I still find that so strange, but let's not ask questions. Their chicken is amazing! I would recommend to anyone who isn't scared of a little grease. The appearance of this place might steer people away, but hey, more chicken for us! As M D. said, oooh those potatoes.. yes and yes. The broasted taters are where it's at. Don't be a fool- get the potatoes.

    (4)

I always go for lunch now and get something off the new 5 dollar menu they have. Lately its been the two chicken wraps, and with the potatoes and a drink - you cant really beat that.

I had an addiction. My only food addiction. And that my friends was for chicken shack ribs!!!! I had to stop eating meat altogether to end it all. And it's worked...so far! Now I get the fried fish sandwich and broasted potatoes. Never had a better tater! The butter can be too much sometimes so ordering with light butter is the key. The ribs, seriously people!!! Screw the chicken...go for the ribs! The meat falls off the bone and they have the BEST BBQ sauce!!!! It's sweet, not spicy. go go go...go get it. For me!

The food here tastes good because it's broasted. What the hell is broasting? I don't know. It's a chicken shack secret. Somehow it makes you sweat grease for a week. It's is so good that, even though you feel like you want to puke immediately after eating it, you're still satisfied. Don't eat here too much or you'll die at forty.

    (4)
  • Sonny R.

so i'm sorry, the inspirational stories on the bulletin board isn't going to make my chicken tastier. and the owners rub it in by posting pictures of them at fascinating places -- like the great wall of china or the pope's warm embrace. the portions are small and you have to pay if you want some hot sauce. and the potatoes, they were ok, but shit, you don't need to feel even more guilty for eating all those calories. all i'm saying is that if the pope knew what kind of mediocre operation they ran, he'd probably not give a shit about them. especially a holy one.

Chicken shack is a metro Detroit staple. The chicken, pork, & fish are all great. The broasted potatoes are good & unique, but the taste varies on how much butter sauce they are swimming in. The cole slaw is more like cabbage soup but really works with these entrees. With anything other than chicken shack food, I think the slaw would not work. Never to be considered health food..."The Shack" is a great place to eat.

Yeah, Chicken Shack is the tool of the devil. And since I am weak I fall for it every time. It's just one of those foods where you have a craving for it, get it, wolf it all down, and then afterwards ask yourself, "why in the hell did I do that?" then swear it all off, only to repeat the cycle a couple of weeks later. I usually get the chicken wings or ribs with the broasted potatoes smeared with butter. My biggest complaint is that their consistency is pretty shaky, which is really annoying. I mean, when I get something so unhealthy it BETTER taste good, right?

It ain't healty, but when you ask someone for a good place to eat, do you ever ask "Do you know where there is a healthy place to eat?" NO. You know you want it. Try the chicken, try the smelt, but please sop up the buttery mess in your biscuit. You'll be glad you did.

A working take-out dinner of the unhealthy delicious sort. We got battered fried cod, broasted chicken, and potatoes. Sadly the rolls and coleslaw didn't get included with our order but that was the only complaint from the group.

Don't eat here too much or you'll die at forty.

so i'm sorry, the inspirational stories on the bulletin board isn't going to make my chicken tastier. and the owners rub it in by posting pictures of them at fascinating places -- like the great wall of china or the pope's warm embrace. the portions are small and you have to pay if you want some hot sauce. and the potatoes, they were ok, but shit, you don't need to feel even more guilty for eating all those calories. all i'm saying is that if the pope knew what kind of mediocre operation they ran, he'd probably not give a shit about them. especially a holy one.
